An unforgettable off-road adventure through the heart of the French and Italian Alps.
THE ADVENTURE
Over twelve days (11 nights), we’ll journey from Lyon to the French Riviera, traversing some of the most spectacular alpine landscapes in Europe. This route winds through the high passes of the French and Italian Alps, linking historic mountain forts, ancient trade routes, and wild ridgelines that blur the border between countries.
We’ll begin in Lyon and head for St Gervais, then make our way across the Alps before ending the trip with a night in Cannes. Along the way, we’ll climb above 3,000m to the Col du Sommelier, camp at abandoned military outposts, explore remote tracks, and enjoy incredible local food in mountain villages known for their hospitality and tradition.
This is one of the very best overland routes in Europe — a truly epic journey through culture, wilderness, and history. With a maximum of seven vehicles, this small-group tour is perfect for travellers who want to experience the Alps like a local — with a bilingual guide who’s lived the route and knows every turn.
ACCOMMODATION
A mix of wild camping, commercial campsites, and motels. This combination allows for full cultural immersion and access to some of the most spectacular overnight locations in the Alps. As with all our longer trips, we keep plans flexible to adapt to weather and group preferences — planned overnight stops will be shared a few days in advance where bookings are needed.
COST BREAKDOWN
The guiding cost of the European Alps Overlander is $7,000 NZD per vehicle.
Vehicle rental is additional.
All travellers are responsible for their own flights and personal travel insurance.
NOTE: In our most recent trip, we crossed international borders more than ten times — and in some locations, you can choose which country to camp in by simply walking across the track!
